Holy Basil Frozen Treats

As many of you know, I’m a huge fan of Holy Basil (Tulsi) tea. Not only do I enjoy its fragrant aroma, I’m a big fan of its many health benefits. Holy Basil is often referred to as the “elixir of life”, and for good reason. It helps the body adapt to stress, calms anxiety and can ease depression. It is also helpful for pain management as it has been found that Holy Basil acts as a COX-2 inhibitor (like many anti-inflammatory pharmaceuticals). It can also help regulate blood sugar by balancing insulin metabolism. Natural medicine guru Dr. Andrew Weil states that Holy Basil has traditionally been used for heart problems, asthma and bronchitis – phew! That’s one remarkable plant! I am such a fan that I collaborated with Rebecca from Clearview Tea company to provide Kind Living with its very own organic Holy Basil tea. I’m super happy with the result as it’s never bitter and can be used in so many ways.

As my newsletter deadline was fast approaching, my goal was to create a healthy, easy treat that celebrated the arrival of sunny warm days – yay! I also wanted to use up some of my yummy organic produce that I am so very much enjoying from Organics Live. Then there’s chia – you can count on me to find ways to sneak this crazy-good-for-you seed into a recipe! Chia not only adds some protein, omega-3 fats and fibre, it also provides a handy gel-like consistency which helps to keep the frozen treats from becoming messy as they melt. So with that criteria in hand, I present to you Holy Basil Frozen Treats!

Holy Basil Frozen Treats

2 cups steeped Holy Basil Tea
2 cups freshly squeezed orange juice
Thinly sliced orange pieces
juice of 1 lemon
2 T chia seeds
2 T honey (optional)

Brew Holy Basil tea and allow to steep for 20 minutes. While tea is steeping, juice your oranges and lemon. Add chia seeds to juice and allow to gel while tea is steeping. Place one thinly sliced piece of orange in each of your popsicle molds. Combine juice and tea. Add to molds and freeze for 10 – 12 hours or until set. Enjoy!
